Monday, May 6, 2024, will mark the District鈥檚 official launch of SchoolCare, a state-of-the-art student health record platform designed to provide real-time access to vital health information for parents, guardians, and appropriate school staff members.

With SchoolCare, a leading student health record platform utilized by schools nationwide, 含羞草影院. of Wayne Township is setting new standards for student health management. SchoolCare adheres to FERPA and HIPAA regulations, ensuring the confidentiality and security of student health records.

At the heart of SchoolCare is its ability to automate immunization data collection, providing timely notifications for missing or soon-to-be-due immunizations. This feature streamlines the immunization tracking process, ensuring that students are up-to-date with their vaccinations for optimal health and safety.

Moreover, SchoolCare is a game-changer in terms of managing student health information. It simplifies the process of retaining health data from one year to the next, eliminating the need for repetitive data entry and making administrative tasks more efficient for school personnel.

Parents and guardians will receive email invitations from SchoolCareon Monday, May 6, 2024, with links to activate their SchoolCare accounts. This activation will unlock a host of services, including notifications about their child鈥檚 medication inventory levels, screenings, health room visits, and crucial health alerts, all at their fingertips.

Summer EBT, branded as Indiana SUN Bucks, is a new and permanent program provided by the State to issue money to households with school-aged children to purchase food during the summer.

  • Households may be eligible to receive a $120 lump sum benefit for each qualifying child.
  • Children must be eligible for free or reduced-price meals, and eligibility must be established annually.
  • Qualifying students are defined as all children enrolled in school – including pre-k and those older than 18, as long as they were enrolled during the 2023-2024 school year.

Who qualifies for SUN Bucks?
含羞草影院. of Wayne Township is a CEP district, which means we provide free meals to all students. Students who attend CEP schools do not automatically qualify for SUN Bucks. Each student must qualify based on the following information:

  • The student must be considered direct certified. Direct certified students are considered those receiving SNAP, TANF, income-based Medicaid (meeting the USDA income guidelines) or are foster, migrant, or homeless.
  • Students who have a free/reduced application on file with the school district as approved for free/reduced status.

If your student falls into either one of these categories listed above, there鈥檚 no action required.

Those who are not approved for free or reduced benefits, but feel they might qualify, should apply using the . The deadline to apply for 2024 SUN Bucks benefits is Friday, August 16, 2024.

Important Facts to Know

  • New cards will be issued for this program in June 2024 with the full $120 benefit.
  • Those who apply between May 1-August 16, 2024, will be processed and receive their card as quickly as possible after approval.
  • Households will receive one card for each eligible student in the household.
  • The money can be spent on the same items that SNAP dollars can be spent on.
  • Households have until Monday, April 29, 2024, to update their Skyward mailing address with their student鈥檚 school.
  • After Tuesday, April 30, the must be used to submit address changes, opt out of card benefits, ask questions about eligibility, inquire about a missing card, and notify of fraud or stolen benefits.

]]> The legacy of Priscilla Dillow, a remarkable advocate for girls in sports, will be honored at a Celebration of Life event on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. in the Ben Davis High School gymnasium. Dillow, who passed away in February at the age of 80, leaves behind a profound impact on the sports community, particularly in her efforts to champion gender equality and empower young female athletes.

Dillow worked as a teacher, coach, Assistant Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, and Athletic Director at Ben Davis High School, where she spent 37 years before retiring in 2002. During her tenure, Dillow fought tirelessly to establish opportunities for girls to participate in athletics, even before the enactment of Title IX.

It鈥檚 time to get ready for Central Indiana鈥檚 first visible total solar eclipse in nearly 820 years, which will take place on April 8, 2024.

To ensure the safety and well-being of our staff and students, the 含羞草影院. of Wayne Township Board of Education has approved the use of an inclement weather day, which is already built into the school calendar. Therefore, all 含羞草影院. of Wayne Township schools and offices will be closed on Monday, April 8, 2024.

What is a Solar Eclipse?

Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon blocks any part of the sun. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible (weather permitting) in Indiana. All continental U.S. states will experience at least a partial eclipse. Two shadows will pass over – a lighter shadow called the penumbra and a dark shadow called the umbra. Indiana is located in the umbra, so we will experience a total solar eclipse.

In Indianapolis, the eclipse will begin around 1:51 PM and last until 4:24 PM, and will move through 5 phases, 4 of which are called 鈥榗ontacts.鈥 To view the eclipse, you MUST wear proper eye protection (solar filter glasses) during all but totality.

How can I stay safe while viewing the eclipse?

  • The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed, partially eclipsed, or eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as the purple eclipse glasses we have provided. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. They transmit far more sunlight than is safe for our eyes.
  • Inspect the glasses before use: be sure there are no scratches, damage, or punctures. Follow the directions printed on the glasses.
  • Use with adult supervision.
  • If you wear glasses, keep them on. Put the solar filter glasses over them, or hold them in place.
  • Look down, put the solar glasses on, then look at the sun. After looking at the sun, turn away and remove the filter. Do not remove the solar glasses while looking at the sun.
  • Do not look at the sun with an unfiltered camera, telescope, or binoculars. Do not put the solar filter glasses over a device to look at the sun.
  • The only time to view the sun without solar filter glasses is during the totality of the total solar eclipse, which lasts about three minutes.
  • Individuals should consult with a health care provider about specific health needs.

The eclipse begins at First Contact, the moment the moon first 鈥渢ouches鈥 the edge of the solar disk, approaching it from the right.听 The moon, invisible until now in the daytime sky, becomes visible as a black disk blocking the Sun.听

For the next hour and fifteen minutes, the moon slowly covers a larger and larger part of the Sun.
Second Contact

 Solar Filter Glasses are Needed

The moon completely covers the Sun.听 On the moon鈥檚 leading edge, the last slice of light shines through lunar valleys, breaking up into a chain of bright 鈥減earls鈥 called Baily鈥檚 beads.

Then in the final seconds before the moon completely covers the Sun, there is a last bright flash, joined with a view of the corona – the Sun鈥檚 upper atmosphere – encircling the moon.听 This produces a spectacular effect called the diamond ring.听 After the diamond ring disappears, you have a couple of seconds to notice another layer of the Sun, the red-colored chromosphere, before it is also eclipsed.听
Totality

 Safe to Observe Without Solar Filter Glasses

The Sun is now completely hidden, revealing the full solar corona.听 This stage of a total solar eclipse, Totality, is the only time we on Earth can see the corona, which streams out into space above the Sun鈥檚 surface.听 Normally, the corona鈥檚 light is outshone by the bright photosphere.听 You may see bright pink spots at the Sun鈥檚 edge.听 These are gigantic loops of plasma that rise from the Sun鈥檚 surface, called prominences.听 Their beautiful color is glowing hydrogen gas.听听听

During totality is the only time you can safely look at the Sun with your naked eye.听 If you look away for a few moments you will notice that the sky has become dark, as if it鈥檚 twilight and other stars and planets are visible.听 If you look out toward the horizon, it is also possible to see light from outside of the shadow you are standing in, like a 360-degree sunset.
Third Contact

Totality ends at Third Contact, as the leading edge of the moon begins to move off the Sun.听 Once again, on the opposite side of the moon, the last light of the photosphere shines through mountains and valleys, creating Baily鈥檚 beads.听 At Totality鈥檚 end, resume using safe viewing techniques.

If you look at the ground just before the Second contact and right after the Third contact you may see shadow bands marching across the landscape.听听

Sunlight is restored moments after Third Contact, the Sun reemerges in a burst of light, creating a second diamond ring on the opposite side of the Sun.听 As the moon reveals more of the Sun, the corona quickly fades from view in the brightness of the newly restored photosphere

In the heart of the Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center, a heartwarming initiative is making a significant difference in students’ lives. The Clothing Boutique, a student-led initiative, will be able to bring hope and warmth during the chilly winter months. This November, the boutique received an extraordinary boost – a generous donation of 700 coats from the Salvation Army of Central Indiana, made possible by the annual WTHR Coats for Kids drive.

The Clothing Boutique, nestled within the school, is run by a group of dedicated students who volunteer their time and energy to manage the operations, from organizing the donations to helping their peers find the right fit.

When asked why she dedicates her time to the boutique, one of the student volunteers simply said, “Because it feels good to help others.” This sentiment is echoed by all the student volunteers who take pride in their roles, understanding the impact of their work on their fellow students.

The Clothing Boutique is more than just a place to find a warm coat or a pair of shoes; it’s a symbol of community, generosity, and student empowerment. It’s a place where students learn firsthand the joy of service, the importance of community, and the impact they can make in the lives of their peers. And with the influx of 700 new coats, the boutique is set to spread more warmth, one coat at a time.

On Nov. 28, The Wayne Township Education Foundation launched a weeklong campaign in honor of Giving Tuesday, a global generosity movement encouraging people to do good. The campaign, which runs until Friday, aims to raise funds to support teachers in bringing the curriculum to life and provide classroom resources and materials that offer hands-on learning experiences.

Throughout the week, board members of the Wayne Township Education Foundation have been busy visiting classrooms to recognize and celebrate teachers who have been recipients of their grants. These visits serve not only as a token of appreciation for the teachers’ hard work and dedication but also as an opportunity to see firsthand the impact of the Foundation’s support.

The funds raised during the Giving Tuesday campaign will be instrumental in enhancing the learning experience for students. By providing resources that are beyond the classroom budget, the foundation empowers our teachers to offer enriched learning experiences.听
